Not Exactly Miss Popular

I realize that this topic will step on toes & that I am not going to win any popularity prizes.  But the media craze on the latest summer entertainment has me sick to my stomach.  The easiest way to word this post is to not use my words but rather words from the Bible.  Inspired words of God & words that I choose to live my life by.

"For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life & peace."
Romans 8:5-6

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good & acceptable & perfect."
Romans 12:2

"Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence & if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things."
Philippians 4:8

As Christians we are called to a higher standard of living.  Entertainment such as the movie, Magic Mike & books like Shades of Grey should repulse us.  When sin is glorified, God is not.  Period.
As Christians, we should not have to apologize for not wanting to read or not wanting to watch some form of entertainment where deep consequences are real.  The devil uses our minds, our hearts, our flesh to break & destroy relationships.  Relationships with our spouses & ultimately our relationship with Him.  Be careful of summer blockbusters, the results truly can be damaging.

  1. I agree 100%. This kind of stuff sickens me. People think it's just a book or just a movie, but that's where it starts. Soon, they will come out with a Shades of Grey movie. It will not be appropriate in any way. It starts with things like that, and eventually escalates to much more. I know..I lived through it for 7 years! It's really hard for me to watch people read these books and watch these movies and just take it so lightly. I've lived the effect of pornography on families. It's devastating. Anyway..good post! I agree with you completely!

  2. Thanks Rachel. I think we need to help point each other to high standards. Higher than the culture. Fifty Shades of Grey is sheer unadulterated erotica. Many many are destroyed by pornography --even secular culture identifies this reality.

  3. AMEN!! Couldn't agree more - I don't even know what Shades of Grey is about and have no desire to find out, but I'm shocked at the amount of Christians lining up to go see Magic Mike. Really?! How do we teach our children to live lives that are honoring to God when we are heading out to see movies about strippers? Very sad!!

  4. Thank you Rachel!! I have had a hard time processing in my mind over and over all of this media and "literature" as well. What I keep hearing are the cries of broken wives that feel betrayed after learning about their husbands porn usage, but were the first ones out the door for Mike and to buy/borrow Grey. The enemy sure is crafty and hits men and women equally. Sadly so many women are blind to this right now.
    Again, thank you-

  5. Amen and amen, my friend. My husband and I were just talking about this last night. In the 12 years we've been married, we haven't had cable. Of course we spend a ton of time on the internet, but we rarely watch TV. So when we do turn it on (when we're staying at a hotel, etc.), we are blown away by the extensive rotting away of morals! The enemy has figured out he can easily get in the back door of the church and into the homes and hearts of believers by a subtle little thing called desensitization.

Thanks for having the guts to write this.
